Before receiving support from The Dream, Plan, Live programme I had

no notion of what person-centred planning was. Since becoming

disabled and needing help, no one had bothered asking me what I want my life to look like. I had been carried along, fitting in to everyone else's timetable.
 

However, the support I have received through this process has given me the opportunity to actually realise what I do want my life to look like. It has helped me realise that I still have rights as a disabled person to live the life I want to live. It has helped me realise that I have a voice and I don't have to just fall into line with someone else's plan for me.

While I have always appreciated the help that I get from my carers, no one from the care sector, actually making the decisions for me, has taken the time to get to know me as a person. To them I am a name on a sheet, requiring care and nothing else. Once they have ticked the box that carers have allocated to them, it is job done.
 

My favourite part of the plan was being able to speak freely and safely about me. About who I am and who I would like to be. Speaking to someone who truly can appreciate how I feel and not someone just nodding their head, as if they understand. When I know they don't and can't because they haven't been in my shoes.

Anyone thinking of going through this process, I would say go for it! Don't be afraid to speak about the positives in your life, but also speak loud and proud about what you need and want for yourself. Don't accept being parked in a corner, while everyone around you gets on with the life that they choose for themselves. Don't feel like you can't speak up, because it is inconvenient for others.
