I have been blind since birth with Cortical Blindness. This means that the Sight Centre of the brain is damaged, so messages are not passed to my eyes. This differs from other forms of blindness which in turn means that I have encountered my own unique set of challenges towards living a fully independent life.
These experiences have made me increasingly conscious of the potential barriers faced by all disabled people. Through sharing my own lived experience, I hope to make small steps towards making the world a more equal place for other people who face similar challenges and obstacles.
My journey as an Accessibility Consultant began during my time as a theatre practitioner specialising in finding creative ways to make drama more accessible for blind and visually Impaired people. My original focus was on experimenting with Audio Description and discovering ways to place this into the narrative of a text rather than having it as an added on feature. This in turn made me think about accessibility more generally and the means by which it could become a primary consideration when working with and supporting disabled people.
I have been working with APT PSP since 2021 and have delivered training and consultancy for them on a variety of subjects including Visual Awareness Training. I have also consulted on Audio Description in the workplace and daily life and accessible recruitment for employers.
