What is the Disability Confident Scheme?

The Disability Confident Employer Scheme, launched in November 2016, is a nationally recognised accreditation scheme designed to get more disabled people into work. It is voluntary and has been developed with employers, disability charities and disabled people.

It is a government scheme that helps employers attract, recruit and retain disabled staff. It provides advice and information to help organisations think differently about disability and how to make the workplace more accessible.

The scheme has been created to help employers draw from the widest possible pool of talent.

What does the Disability Scheme Mean For Employers?

Disability Confident is a government initiative designed to encourage employers to recruit and retain disabled people and those with health conditions. It is voluntary and has been developed by employers and disabled people's representatives.

Disability Confident committed The employer agrees to give five commitments: inclusive and accessible recruitment, communicating vacancies, offering an interview to disabled people, providing reasonable adjustments, and supporting existing employees

The Disability Confident scheme helps employers recruit and retain great people, and to:

  • challenge attitudes and increase understanding of disability

  • draw from the widest possible pool of talent

  • secure high-quality staff who are skilled, loyal and hard working

  • improve employee morale and commitment by demonstrating fair treatment

It also helps identify those employers who are committed to inclusion and diversity in the workplace.

The scheme has 3 levels designed to support employers on their Disability Confident journey, these are:

  • Disability Confident Committed (Level 1)

  • Disability Confident Employer (Level 2)
